Evening hopes.
Tonight five candles are burning on the menorah, and I'm thinking about having had the first classroom emergency of my teaching career. (I am fine; it wasn't my emergency. I am hoping that the person whose emergency it was is also fine, but as of now, I don't know.)
I had forgotten, somehow, how at this time of year, anything important that goes wrong throws off a lot of other things--has the potential, in fact, to throw me off for the rest of the day.

A happy postscript: late last night, I heard from the person whose emergency it was, and things are better: no overnight hospital stay, for instance. Thanks for your thoughts, everyone.
